2026

My partner and I have been keeping the kids busy during summer vacation. So far, this has included a trip to Vernon, BC; building electronics with my son; many trips to parks; and lots of art.

Agentic Engineering

This year has been dominated by agentic AI. I have attended two AI conferences this year: Cascadia JS and the AI Engineer World’s Fair. I have been working on building agentic systems for my job search as well as learning Kubernetes.

Homelab (with AI!)

I have been building a homelab. While I have some Kubernetes experience, I have never built a cluster. I worked with Hermes Agent and built a system to teach me how to build and maintain a cluster.

Languages: Elixir and Rust

Earlier in the year I was working through the Pragmatic Studios excellent Elixir course. I completed it and have moved on to Phoenix. On the Rust front, I am building an agentic harness.

Human Languages

I have been keeping my Japanese language skills fresh with Duolingo, but I am actively working on Mandarin. The two languages are complementary in terms of characters, but the grammar is considerably different.

Electronics

My son and I have been exploring electronics. We have built:

  • A simple 555 circuit in astable mode
  • An astable multivibrator

We attended a soldering class in Seattle with five adults and an eight-year old. He had the most experience out of the group and didn’t burn himself unlike myself.

2023

As a nerd

  • I joined a data science paper reading group several months ago and am learning more about areas like recommender systems.
  • My background is in computer vision, so I am also getting more experience with recurrent neural networks and Transformer-based architectures.

As a father

I enjoy spending time with my family. My six-year old son is currently into:

  • The Titanic and 1900s era ships
  • Geography and flags
  • Minecraft

My daughter is into:

  • Colors
  • Baby Shark
  • Spending time with her brother

Earlier

Given that I have not posted much online for the last several years, I wanted to post some fun highlights.

  • I took an online Deep Learning Systems course taught at CMU. We built a PyTorch-like framework with its own tensor and autodifferentation systems. I completed 3 out of 5 assignments before life happened, so I hope to finish up in the near future.
